Chiefs Trade Up to Select Xavier Worthy

Blockbuster Deal Lands Texas Wide Receiver

Kansas City Moves Up Four Spots in First Round

The Kansas City Chiefs have pulled off a bold trade in the 2024 NFL draft, moving up four spots with the Buffalo Bills to select Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy at No. 28 overall.

The Chiefs surrendered their original first-round pick (No. 32) and a third-round pick (No. 93) to the Bills in exchange for the right to draft Worthy. The trade marks a significant investment for Kansas City, but it also highlights the team's commitment to upgrading its passing offense.

Worthy, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound playmaker, is considered one of the top wide receivers in the draft. He led the nation in receiving yards (1,463) and touchdowns (17) in 2023 for the Longhorns. His speed and athleticism make him an ideal target for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The trade is a major departure from the Chiefs' usual draft strategy under general manager Brett Veach. In recent years, Veach has prioritized accumulating draft capital through trades that move down in the draft. However, the decision to move up for Worthy suggests that the Chiefs are eager to secure a difference-maker.

The move also reunites Worthy with his former college teammate, tight end Noah Gray, who was drafted by the Chiefs in the third round of the 2023 draft. Gray played a key role in Worthy's breakout season at Texas, and the Chiefs hope that the duo can continue to connect on the field in the NFL.

The Chiefs now have seven picks remaining in this year's draft, including two in the second round (No. 63 and No. 67). They are expected to continue to be active in the draft, as they look to fill remaining holes on their roster and build a Super Bowl contender.
